Latest report from visiongain: Top 10 Biotech Companies 2004: Innovators and Leaders in the Market

NewsreleaseDate: 2004-11-16

San Francisco, CA and London, UK; 16 November 2004 – visiongain.
More than 325 million people worldwide have been helped by the more than 130 biotechnology drugs and vaccines approved by the US FDA. Of the biotech medicines on the market, 70 per cent were approved in the last six years.

Market capitalization of the biotech industry was $224 billion in 2002 and the industry has more than tripled in size since 1992, with revenues increasing from $8 billion in 1992 to $27.6 billion in 2001. Biotechnology is one of the most research-intensive industries in the world. The U.S. biotech industry spent $15.6 billion on research and development in 2001. Thus the life sciences hold considerable promise as an investment sector. In recent years biotech has established itself as a successful industry in its own right, with a number of high profile approvals by leading companies contributing to the profile of the industry.

From the standpoint of growth of Earnings Per Share (EPS), the leading five biotech’s outperformed the leading five pharmaceutical companies. When we take into account the fact that the future of the global pharmaceutical industry is suffering from a developmental 'dry spell' where their product pipelines are concerned, the role of biotech is becoming increasingly prominent in their future.

“When we take into account the fact that the future of the global pharmaceutical industry is suffering from a developmental 'dry spell' where their product pipelines are concerned, the role of biotech is becoming increasingly prominent in their future”, says John Waslif, Pharmaceutical report Analyst. The importance of innovative biotech’s in the future of healthcare is reflected in the dollar value of the alliances between Pharma and biotech - in the early 1990s, the average alliance was valued in the region of $40 million, in 2003 it was nearer $100 million.

In recent years biotech has established itself as a successful industry in its own right, with a number of high profile approvals by leading companies contributing to the profile of the industry. There were 35 biotechnology drug approvals in 2002 - more than in any other year in the history of the industry. Of the 35 biotech approvals, 23 were for new products and those remaining were for new indications granted to already-marketed drugs. Of these biotech-derived products, five are well on their way to attaining blockbuster sales status.

“It is into this burgeoning market that antisense developers hope to make an impact. Although antisense drugs are traditionally grouped into the biotech sector, the ways by which these drugs have been developed to work are singular in nature and their success would by no doubt be revolutionary” adds Waslif.
